Battlestar Galactica: He That Believeth In Me (BSG Season 4, Episode 3 Review)
Whoooa, baby. Battlestar Galactica is back in furiously awesome fashion. Wasn’t the opening to this episode absolutely astounding! Everything was perfect and in place. We had action. We had mystery. We had mysticism. We had questions. And those four naughty Cylons…how long until they take the big fall?
Survivors: 39,698. That simple number in the opening scene always gives a sense of importance and purpose to the events that unfold in the episode. As those numbers dwindle, you know it becomes more and more important for Earth to be reached.
The big story of this episode was the return of series heroine and tough girl Starbuck. After being encountered by a shocked Apollo, Starbuck reveals “I have seen Earth! I’m going to take us there.”
Of course, the Old Man Adama isn’t hearing any of that. It could be Cylon trickery! You think Starbuck is happy with that? Mmm.
Interwoven into that plot is a Cylon Raider attack upon the space caravan of humans. How did they find out where BSG and friends were in space? Was it due to betrayal by the four secret Cylons?
For those who may not remember, at the end of last season we found that Colonel Tigh, Galen “Chief” Tyrol, Samuel Anders and Tory Foster were all actually no good Cylons. Of course, one also remains hidden and unidentified as of yet in the fleet.
There is an AWESOME moment in the beginning of this episode where we get a glimpse inside Colonel Tigh’s mind, as he takes orders from Admiral Adama. You know the moment. You probably had a geekgasm, paused the episode then re-watched the scene again. If that’s what these 4 cylons are going to get as mental commands…oh boy.
There was also a curious moment with Anders went out with the fleet to battle Cylon Raiders. As the attack commenced and BSG took massive missile volleys -and Pyxis was destroyed- Anders appears to be paralyzed by a Raider that navigated to his ship’s front.
With a red beam of light, the Raider seemed to ‘activate’ something within the iris of Ander’s eye. I saw a red glow and a digitized rotation within the radius, though friend’s say otherwise. Look out for Anders to flip in upcoming episodes.
As the action packs up on the outside of the ship, we’re also kept up to speed on the Gaius Baltar plotline. Having avoided legal death, Gaius finds himself being adorned by a cult of sorts. Many in the Cult of Gauius are hot women who want him. Poor guy.
In the meantime, we see religious/myth elements played out as Baltar’s inner cylon Six encourages him to ‘preach’ monotheism to his new…well, harem of followers. Within this group a sick child emerges, and Baltar initially gives what seems to be a ‘fake’ prayer for the child.
Later, however, Baltar gives a heart-felt prayer. Within this prayer Gaius states he would love for the one god to take his life for that of the innocent, sick child. What happens moments later? His life is almost taken by a mob of attackers. Balter survives (even as he pleads for his attacker to take his life, thinking his prayer was answered and his guilt from his crimes would vanish), but miraculously Baltar survived the attack and the child’s health was instantly better. What’s going on there?
Meanwhile, Starbuck is of course brooding as no one believes her story. It’s a tough one to swallow. President Laura Roslin really throws the heat to Starbuck, asking her to give specific details of the two months (to which seemed like only hours to Starbuck) that she was away.
Starbuck only remembers seeing Earth, changing her heading and blacking out. But she also insists that she has a “sense” of when the fleet is headed towards Earth. Starbuck insists that everytime the fleet “jumps” they are going in the wrong direction and her sense of where Earth is slowly fading away.
Roslin doesn’t buy it. The old man says he can’t afford to buy it. Young Adama has lust in his eyes for Starbuck. How does our girl respond to all this pressure?
Impulsively and with force.
Starbuck beats up some guards and heads to President Laura Roslin’s bed.
Starbuck has a gun.
