World of Warcraft, otherwise known simply as WoW, is one of the most popular and successful computer games in history. It is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game that 6 million people pay $10 -15 per month to play. This type of popularity creates a sample size that is large enough to reflect the forces that control it. In Layman's terms, with this many people playing this online game at any given time human nature tends to get a stronger representation.

The first "reality" check was a bug that caused a plague to outbreak and affect people's characters in certain cases instantly killing any player below a certain level.

The second "reality" check was when this group of Warcraft players otherwise known as a guild interrupted a memorial service. Apparently, some dude dies in real life who is a popular WoW player. The people in the game think it would be nice to have a memorial for the player so they log into his account, take the character to a lake, and set it up for everyone to come pay their respects.

A bunch of dudes decide this would be a great time to ambush everyone so they run over a hill, kill the dead guy's character, and then wipe out everyone who was there to show their respects. They filmed the whole thing and put it on the net.

hehehe... pwnt...

Though I disagree with the attacking guild. If these people were truly friends with the dead guy, theres a good chance that most of them couldn't go to his real funeral, even if they wanted.
It may be an odd alternative, but with the same group of friends that would have tried to show up to the real thing, it would still be a (quite odd) replacement for one.

yeah, I saw this video about a month ago (or whenever it came out - maybe like a half a month ago).

It's so good because they actually went through all the effort to set up some stupid e-funeral, but got ambushed in the middle of it (which is something the game is basically made for). I'd be so ashamed to have a funeral in WoW. I feel sorry for the guy who died for having such nerdy friends.

You guys are missing the point.

The reason they had the "service" in-game was because that's how he was known to the guild. It's just a fitting way to say goodbye to someone, kinda like a burial at sea for a sailor, or a fire-truck entourage for a battalion chief. You're memory is honored the way that you are remembered.

I'm sure his real-life family & friends had a real-life service.

Hmm... never had the need to make an account but this story was just outragious and I needed to say stuff...

To all you people who say funerals shouldn't be in-game, if someone you knew died, obviously your not gonna go into a game and not talk about it... I mean, surely your gonna mention it to SOMEONE.... then they might put their oppinion in and then more people come. Just makes you feel better...

Obviously WoW is a rpg, let them role play as they wish.... I mean, they bought the game, who cares if they throw a funeral?

Now if I had people ruining MY ceremony, man, (well my clan) would gang up on the guy, until he left the server... however, this ain't a FPS, so I guess you could just chase him...

This is what happens when we let nerds...well, when we let nerds do anything.

I think it was disrespectful for those people to go to a faux funeral with their monsters and wizards and whatnot.

All these posts and about three people got it right.

It was disgustingly disrespectful of people.

It shows a huge lack of judgement on the part of the people who did it and who think it was ok.

Only one word need be said. Jerks.

FidoQuick Take On The RNC
Being an open minded individual, I decided to spend a couple hours watching the Republican national convention in St Paul, or Minneapolis, Minnesota, or wherever it is. I had initially tuned in to watch Sarah Palin’s address, in order to maybe get a read on what she may be all about. I regret that I couldn’t get that far. After viewing Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani speak to the delegates, I felt an overwhelming need to seek asylum in another country. ...
