World of Warcraft, otherwise known simply as WoW, is one of the most popular and successful computer games in history. It is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game that 6 million people pay $10 -15 per month to play. This type of popularity creates a sample size that is large enough to reflect the forces that control it. In Layman's terms, with this many people playing this online game at any given time human nature tends to get a stronger representation.

The first "reality" check was a bug that caused a plague to outbreak and affect people's characters in certain cases instantly killing any player below a certain level.

The second "reality" check was when this group of Warcraft players otherwise known as a guild interrupted a memorial service. Apparently, some dude dies in real life who is a popular WoW player. The people in the game think it would be nice to have a memorial for the player so they log into his account, take the character to a lake, and set it up for everyone to come pay their respects.

A bunch of dudes decide this would be a great time to ambush everyone so they run over a hill, kill the dead guy's character, and then wipe out everyone who was there to show their respects. They filmed the whole thing and put it on the net.

When people do something so stupid and ridiculous as to have a virtual funeral for someone IN A VIDEO GAME, they leave themselves open to, well, this. It's a shame this kid died, but it's a bigger shame that all his friends are such pathetic nerds.

I don't know whats more lame. The first group having an online funeral or the the other guys (serenity now) theme song, Scatman. What a bunch of tools.

Definatly the Scatman theme song.

I'm going to make a pretty big assumption here, but if I died, and people held a gigantic memorial for me I'd be honored. If some PvP guild came along and started battling and I was in heaven looking down upon everyone there, I think I would give a smirk, because that would make my funeral (in the game not in the real life) a bit enjoyable. What I'm saying is the guy who died (if there is a heaven) must have been watching and just laughing, because that's REAL GAMING BEOTCH!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think it was disrespectful, I think it was a joyous occasion for the dead man watching the memorial. That's only if it was me though.

Mixing reality with video games...Seems to be the topic along with the violence issue. I don't know really how i feel about that. On the one hand having a funeral for a character in a game sounds stupid. Then again those characters at this digital funeral could have really been friends that live long distances. If that were the case id try to say goodbye to a friend anyway i could.

Also along the mixing reality in with video games thing, i just think it's sad that even as "gay" as some of you say this funeral is, i think it's even worse to have people that twisted go and slaughter people at a funeral...You have to be alittle messed up to think that would be fun, even in a game.

Wtf .. wtf .. wtf is going on; some people running then thunder bolts seems to fall everywhere .. I'm not familiar with this WOW so it took some time to fully understand ... Am I correct in assuming that same people sank so pathetically low that they have "funerals" in some online game? Well I'm not an avid online gamer but I'm glad this guild or whatever slapped some sense into them.

To be honest the whole business gives new meaning to the word geek.
