This is a real annoyance to me and I know a BUNCH of you hate people who link directly to their blogs when they submit a story. Here's to the asshats in context:

a) You're an ass for just trying to generate traffic

b) Depending on the site, in most cases this constitutes copyright infringement even if you cite, unless you actually link to the page (which few people do anyway)

c) It's unprofessional

d) It ruins your credibility as a poster

e) Any reasons that you can think of as to why linking to a blog as opposed to the source is retarded

I ask you guys: Would you rather the admins simply delete stories that link directly to someone's blog as opposed to the source? In my opinion, doing this is just a selfish way to feed oneself an ego biscuit because of a sudden traffic increase.

Naturally, people that want to submit stories would be expected to link to the SOURCE, not to their blog, if they want the story publicized. In some instances I could "correct" the link to link to the source, just to spite the asshole that links to his blog, but deletion would be easier and cleaner.

Shout if you agree and comment as well with reasons for or against this.

To calm a few of you who do have noteworthy things on your blogs that you'd like to submit, such as a first-hand account of something or something of the sort, noone is going to flagrantly delete ALL blog submissions. It'll be handled case-by-case. This is meant to apply only to the assholes who simply copy and paste a story into their blog and submit it.

The more responses we get, the sooner the blog entries are done away with. It's not quite a problem yet, but it will become one as the site grows.

If someone's blog is just a cut/paste from a legitimate source, then yes, their post should be deleted. However, if it's a blogger's opinion on recent news, sometimes I don't mind reading it.

What if some one compiles all of the information from several sites and does some research of there own? and what if they wrote the article entireley themselves and they dont work for a news site?

@ninja "What if some one compiles all of the information from several sites and does some research of there own? and what if they wrote the article entireley themselves and they dont work for a news site?"

That's what I wanted to point out at the end of my post. The blogs will be looked at. And I already know of ways people are going to try to get around this, by basically summarizing the story with manybe one opinion, and then posting their blog link. Discretion is the key for deleting things, so if you're going to submit a link to your blog, make sure you ARE offering a [pertinent] opinion on the matter.

I'm purposely wording it to be lenient about this; but if people start getting lazy and trying to vaguely work around it, it's their fault.

Bottom Line: Don't link to your blog unless you have a thought-out RESPONSE to the news item, or if you are writing an op-ed based on research. Op-Eds are generally more convenient to read though if they are put into the body of your submission, but no biggie there. In all cases, provide a link to the source or sources, though.

If you or anyone else still see the line as being really fuzzy (it naturally will be slightly fuzzy as there can't be a black line, since the decision rests with individual admins and their opinions, convictions, etc.), I'll be happy to try and explain more throroughly. I'm not gonna just start deleting blog submissions left and right.

I value user input and would not be asking you guys this if I didn't give a shit what you thought. Discretion WILL be used in deciding whether to delete submissions to ensure that valid stories and user opinions are not wrecklessly deleted.

wetback, it's somewhat of a duplicate article. The dupe is simply telling people to stop doing it. This is an expansion of that article, since now there are multiple people who can actually take care of it and reduce the problem.

Its a touchy subject. I do enjoy a few of the blogs posted here and I think some of the guys are damn good writers. However, as with all things, some of them do indeed suck balls.

It all depends on the quality of the writer and what he adds to the story himself.

I agree. People posting their blog, with a link from there to the story, and their blog basically summarizes the story, then says "This sucks" at the end are pointless.

I love reading blogs where people actually post semi-coherent responses to some news article and back up their claims.

Likewise, a blogger submitting a story to his blog which has an opinion that is trying to pass as actual news of a well-known current event is equally useless.

Again, URL changes are always a nice way to fix things instead of deletions. :) Both should work. I just want to be sure people agree before starting anything like that.
