In the beginning, cosmic dust clumped together to form the earth. Actually, strike that. It wasn’t the beginning. It was most probably not even close to the beginning. It is, however, the closest thing we… as humans… can relate to as the beginning. In reality, though, it was probably nearer to the middle.
One thing that was most definitely not around was god. Humans needed to be evolved first to come up with that concept. The existence of a larger plan was definitely present, but it didn’t come from any god. No one being could ever hope to control the vastness of this universe.
Contrary to popular belief, design does not denote intelligence. The fact that something works in a certain way does not mean someone made it to be so. Chemical reactions can be seen all around us. When substance A mixes with substance B, C happens. No intelligence, simply a reaction. The only creatures burdened with intelligence are us. On this planet anyways…
The burden of intelligence also leaves us with the burden of ignorance. A duality of sorts, like good and evil. Neither can exist without the other. If you are looking for a meaning to life and everything around it, it is balance. Everything in this universe has its opposite. If you are looking for a meaning to life, however, you are entirely missing the point.
We are here. We live, we eat, we work, we sleep… we try to make the best of our lives while we have them. We know where we are now. The promise of life after death that religions offer you simply cannot be trusted when what could be our only ride down the waterslide is at stake. We must live like heaven and hell were both a myth. Trust me, they are.
As I write this I am staring at the shrine my wife set up on the table to the Virgin de Guadalupe. That’s Mexican for some shit I don’t understand. Something about the way the light from the candles hits the smooth ceramic of the statue in the darkness is mesmerizing. I can sometimes see why people want to believe in such things. It could add a sense of hope where it was needed.
However, those very same beliefs have allowed countless tyrants to sieze unlimited power and take their sick bloodlust out on millions of innocent folks. It has even allowed those lesser men who have mastered its deception to murder and rape unchecked in the name of god. It is just not worth it, all those lives ruined just so a few people could feel better about the bad shit that happens to them.
In the end, only fools would make the claims the major religions do. Nothing is ever for sure in this life. The only thing we know is that tomorrow may never come. If only the world worked as such…
