Smokers: Why Do You Pay for Death?

Lumberg

"Hey Peter. Yeeeeeahh."
“Get those TPS reports filled out!” your boss booms on any given Friday. “Screech” goes an old woman’s car as she nearly sideswipes you on the way home. “Dude, I can’t pay my rent this month” slurs your cheapskate roommate as he's downing a pack of Hooch.

So much stress, so little to relieve it in a busy day, right? For many, however, there is a solution to these problems. Some say it's like a sweet, gentle mistress’ caress in the night. It is the romanticized cigarette of commercial lore and widespread use.

Smoking is a subject that annually brings great concern to medical professionals and hopefully many smokers too. You may have seen the “The Truth” ads that run on TV and like me may think they seem corny, extreme and lose gravity or importance of the message. We all understand that yes, smoking can cause cancer and yes, it is a hard habit to break.

So what? Current anti-smoking ad campaigns seem to lead to this question. It is important to appreciate the seriousness of smoking and why you should avoid even if you have never smoked or have been a chain smoker since ‘Nam. This appreciation comes from understanding the simple mechanisms behind nicotine addiction, the full range of ill-effects cigarette chemicals can cause, dispelling myths and finally proactive solutions. With these facts it is possible to more readily understand what smoking means for you.

Where to Start

If you are serious about “kicking” your habit, it is important that you take a long look at the basic science behind smoking. One should realize that nicotine is an active drug that will directly affect structural and chemical elements of your body, thus triggering pleasurable and increasingly addictive sensations.

Many people don’t realize that cigarettes have 60 chemicals that have a high incidence of leading to cancer. Over one third of cancer related deaths this year will be directly linked to smoking. This does not take into account deaths caused from heart disease and respiratory failure, which is also attributed to the nearly 4,000 chemicals found in smoke. About half of all those smokers who continue to smoke will die because of the habit.

“In the United States, tobacco causes nearly 1 in 5 deaths, killing about 438,000 Americans each year. Smoking is the single most preventable cause of death in our society. Based on current patterns, smoking will kill about 650 million people currently alive in the world today. Tobacco-caused deaths worldwide are expected to increase from about 5 million per year today to about 10 million per year by the 2030s. Most of these deaths will occur in developing countries.” (American Cancer Society)

If you are serious about wanting to get over smoking and saving the quality of your life, please visit the links below. These are sources from scientific foundations that have information that can protect the life of you and your loved ones. While some people are able to quit smoking on willpower alone, surveys have indicated that the total number of people able to do this successfully is less than 10%.
The best course of action is to visit a physician or pharmacist to set a program for withdrawal in addition to having good resolve and support from friends.

Smokers, start taking steps today to beat the habit! It doesn’t matter if you have just started or have smoked for 30 years, your body will always benefit more when you let it begin to heal properly. Make the first step.

Personally, I've tried smoking for a long time, it becomes unbearable, I don't even know HOW people can smoke that shit on a daily basis. I quit after two weeks with no trouble, made me fucking sick.

BUT, I'd also like to stress. I don't think smokers want to be seeing this crap, you don't think they see it enough? Every time they open a packet of cigarettes they get warned of their inevitable death by lung cancer, or heart disease etc. They know, they don't need more reminding, if they don't want to quit, fuck it. They obviously get enjoyment from it so let them alone and get on with it.

I don't mind smokers if they kept it to themselves. The worse part is when they think that it's okay to share their smoke with people who don't smoke. Second hand smoke is one of my pet peeves. Especially where I come from. Smokers in my country are some of the worse kinds of humans. They'd smoke in air conditioned rooms given 1/2 the chance. And then act all nonchalant about it.

@ TotalBukkakeAnnihilation. I'd like to think people are being informed enough but from what I see, the answer is no.

Despite warnings many people just don't understand the extent of the harmful chemicals that are in cigarettes and that it is the leading cause of death that is preventable. The trends and expected death rate from cigarettes is really saddening. Access to information is the best way to help with the problem.

Also, kudos for being able to quit in a two week period.

I smoke, and have been trying to quit on and off for a long time. It's long run of "screw this I'm sick of smoking" and "man i love smoking" that switches back and forth.

But since you spent the time to post this, why don't you post something on overweight people too. I swear if one more fat person tells me I shouldn't be smoking I'll tear out their eyes. If you have an unhealthy diet (which what, 60%+ of americans do anyway) then you just need to back off, because in a couple years your obesity epidemic will overshadow smoking, if it hasn't already.

I've even had people tell me that my smoking is part of global warming, that I am killing the environment on each light. A little far fetched, I doubt me smoking is causing these massive hurricanes.
But by that standard, your obesity is going to be inherited by your children, so in a way, your a kid killer.

I really don't mind these kind of articles, and I highly don't recommend any of the pills the FDA says are ok to quit smoking with. If you really want to quit, and if you haven't died by then, wait for the nicotine vaccine to make it's way around the globe.

Edit: Not to mention the statistics for smoking is all jacked up, they actually count it as a smoking-related death if you are a smoker and get killed in a car accident that has nothing to do with smoking.

FidoQuick Take On The RNC
Being an open minded individual, I decided to spend a couple hours watching the Republican national convention in St Paul, or Minneapolis, Minnesota, or wherever it is. I had initially tuned in to watch Sarah Palin’s address, in order to maybe get a read on what she may be all about. I regret that I couldn’t get that far. After viewing Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani speak to the delegates, I felt an overwhelming need to seek asylum in another country. ...
