On the second of August 1990, Saddam Hussein Invaded Kuwait City. I was on my way back from Guantanamo Bay in Cuba when I got word that we would be going to Iraq. We had just finished building Camp X-Ray, which is now famous for housing terrorists and prisoners connected with the 9/11 attacks. During the time of the actual ground offensive, I wrote articles to my hometown newspaper telling of the experiences we faced during that time. This is one of those stories.

I'm confused by you all. This letter is in reference to "Operation Desert Storm." It is interesting, and it is useful, to me, to see the perspective of a soldier who faught in that war.

I'm pretty much anti-war mongering; but I am not anti-human.

So, thanks, syjstr, for sharing your letter. It's much appreciated.

I will hold back my serious anti-war ideals at the moment, and take this letter for what it is. Too bad everyone else is too head-strong to do that.

Freedom? Exactly what freedom have U.S. citizens regained? The Iraqis aren't exactly free either.

@Bigflavor, thanx a bunch! People seem to forget what the Editorial is about. All I want to say about this is this:

Hind sight is 20/20

think about it! and let me know what you all think I mean!

you did well serving your country and while telling your grand kids about freedom don't forget to mention that an education is more important than joining up.

@SeriousSam

if you're talking about the UK than i feel sorry for you and your million speed cameras and security cameras on every block. the US is trying to be like 1984 but we are way behind the UK. also aren't you bloody brits allies with the US on the war in Iraq. so i guess you're just psuedo-fascist.

Preface: Admittedly, I was only 11 when Desert Storm originally began, however from everything I've read and learned about that war, it was a completely different situation than the one we have today. In that war the U.S. fought to liberate a country which had been invaded without provocation. In this war we have invaded the country without provocation. You can belive the Bush/Cheney bullshit, but the truth is that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction and that was our ONLY rationale for invading the country prior to getting there. The traitors in the White House right now (and I mean traitors, they've leaked classified information and have been implicated already in 9/11) have done everything they can to rewrite history to make it seem like we went into Iraq to remove Saddam because of his crimes against humanity, however that was never mentioned prior to the invasion. That being said, let me get on with my reply.

@dudeman27

I don't know if you noticed, but this was about Desert Storm back in the 90s, not the war going on now. The war back then was justified and freed people from an invasion force. The war now has us playing the role of the invaders and had no justification (at least none that wasn't a lie fed to us by our traitorous president). No one is ungrateful to soldiers who do their duty and bring them freedom, they are sickened and saddened by what our great men and women in uniform are being asked to do in service of our country and the traitor that has been leading us for the last 6 years.

I don't know if anyone else has bothered reading the first 5 words of this editorial, but this was not meant to bolster the current situation in Iraq.

war is war. bottom line.

i don't care what your justification is for it, because it doesn't matter.

war = killing people.

sure, it doesn't matter if you're an american and "they" are afghan, or iraqi. but it should. and it would, if you could have some fucking perspective.

imagine you don't live in america. imagine you're living in iraq. your country has been occupied and you're in fear for your life because the US military and "civilian contractors" have raided houses all over the city, dragging your friends family members out of his house in the middle of the night because he's "an insurgent."

you can't defend yourself or your country, or the americans will call you an insurgent and immediately you're villanized as "just another terrorist in a terrorist nation."

you have friends and family who have been shot without provocation, left to die in the streets. the village next to yours has been carpet bombed and about 70% of its population is dead.

it happened during desert storm and it's happening now. a war is a war, whether its to stop terrorists, hitler, communism, the soviets, king george, etc.

war doesn't benefit mankind. war benefits the men in the war business. with mankind's tax dollars. we don't need war to be free. freedom is having no war. having no war begins with each individual treating each other like people. human beings. not just numbers on their killsheet.

i know i'll probably get slammed for saying all this, but its true. you can't kill for peace. it just doesn't work.

Hate the war but not the warrior.

Things are not as simple back then as people make out, but its still no where near as bad a mess as it is now. Remeber, things are going to hell now, because 10 years ago Bush sr. told the Iraqi people to rise up against Sadam, and thousands were slaughtered because support was withdrawn, because the presidents ratign were falling.

Well done on the letter, you did well. And in gulf war 1, the people of Iraqi actually appreciated it too.

@ the author; great article. Can't really say much more than that.

However...

@ silkyjohnson

You say there's no justification for war, ever? I'm going to make the assumption, even if it's wrong, that you're not American. With the way you structure you sentences about America, it would seem you're not from here (America). Because of this, I'm not going to assume you know a whole bunch about American history, but if you do a little research and look up the American Revolutionary War, or the American Civil War, and then are able to tell me that war is NEVER justified I'll have nothing more to say to you. To say that war never gives you freedom proves that you have no idea what freedom is.

I was going to start by saying that I agreed with silkyJohnson and then go on to comment about the first gulf war, but instead I feel I must make a point about cajunguy's statement of how the American Revolutionary War and Civil Wars brought about freedom.

If the said wars did actually bring about freedom in it's true sense then, i'd say - that war was a horrific necessity to bring about that freedom. But I cannot accept that you really are free over there, your consititution (if I believe the film "national treasure" :) is lockd up under the highest security while the text reads something like "if the government becomes corrupt the people shall have the means to overthrow it" - I know I'm not quoting your constitution out-right so if i'm off on the wrong track then please say and i'll use a more relevent point. (I also see the mock-irony in my own reference but the film amused me so if there is truth in it I will use it for a good point)

But as it stands, the only real freedom I think you gained was the freedom from Britannia rule (which, in fairness was a great thing) but sadly you have just become what you fought so hard to escape. So, no, I don't think under those circumstances that they are just wars. siklyjohnson advocated a higher state of human relationships which is a fair if idealistic alternative to war.

We live in troubled times, but we have been here before and things were not as clear cut then as they seem to be stated in history. The truth shall set you free, but we only really control the truth of our own lives and being true to yourself and others is one step towards true peace and freedom. It may never happen. But war for true peace is probably only attainable in films. The blacks and Native Americans hardly saw freedom after those wars. Unless you mean relative freedom?

I'm sorry if you feel I'm attacking you or your beliefs, I am, in a fashion, trying to show you another perspective and maybe we can grow from there.

For the basement dwellers, it's just lack of social skills and the sight of real live boobs.Women, if a guy cums quickly, it's a sign that he's very anxious to rock your thigh clam a...
