Art imitates life or life imitates art? A memorial service gets interrupted by a terrible guild with no mercy.

Quote from the mmorpg forums:
quoteAs much as I hated what you did to the funeral, I just wanted to ask questions without starting a huge flame war.

1. Why did you do it?

All they were trying to do was have a final farewell to their friend. I agree, they should have done it in non-contested area, but still.

and I know you say "Send her parents a card, play your game."

Well, she may have known them, but her parents probably didn't. What would they think if they got a card from a stranger?

2. How come you don't feel bad for their loss of a friend?

I guess that those are the only two questions I had.

1. I did it to piss off those people that brought RL drama into a public video game. I did it because i think the idea of holding a memorial inside a video game is ridiculous and uncalled for, and frankly i think it's embarassing and even dissrespectful to the deceased.

the area that they held it in doesn't matter, it was just a mistake. the whole concept of acting out a funeral with your warrior cows or undead sorcerers is laughable to me, and i enjoyed crashing the event.

sending a card from strangers is wierd? how about sending them a video of you as computer game characters bowing and kneeling infront of your daughter's troll?

2.
People die every day. I lost 2 family members last year, and i don't log on to a video game to expect complete strangers from all over the world to respect my loss. Most of them probably didnt know her outside the game.

That said i do feel sorry for her loss, i just don't feel a need to respect a bunch of dorks acting out a funeral in a video game. For me it wasnt about her, it was about the people in the game.

On the bright side, they should all get role-playing XP for that. The funeral goers for holding a funeral for a guy that actually died, and the raiders for holding true to history! I mean, c'mon, it's based on medieval times, if only barely, and in medival times, there was no better place to raid for loot then a funeral, other than a rich persons wedding... fun times!

Damn, if I was playing in a PvP server, had a clan full of idiots that would probably host a funeral for me in that very PvP server and died IRL, this is the way I would wanna go. With a bigass fragfest after some mourning.

Props to the guys who did this. Even being rivals, at least they bothered to turn up at the "e-funeral".

My respects to the family of the deceased though.

You're looking at it the wrong way. The one's holding the memorial were getting in contact with eachother the only way they knew how. They weren't there to pay their respects to his character, they were there to pay their respects to the PLAYER. If they were holding a similar 'memorial service' over a series of video phones say, and someone hacked in and mooned everyone watching, I think most people would call that sick. If someone decided to streak through a proper funeral in a cemetary, they would be arrested and likely be feeling fairly sore and bruised by the time they got out. As a species I kinda thought we were beyond that level of disrespect.

Not taking the game too seriously involved putting down the animated axes and swords and what-have-you, and NOT PLAYING the game. They used it as a universal medium to meet and 'pay their respects'; just to go through the unnecessary motions to show that;'I'm gonna' miss this guy'.

Taking the game to seriously, involves removing from yourself all the civility and decencey of a modern human and behaving like the characters in the game. Not one person on the attacking line even so much as DOUBTED that those at the 'service' did not wish to play the game at that point. It was universally clear that they wanted to borrow a little bandwidth for a few minutes and trusted to the respect and honour of civilized human beings to leave them alone for that.

Though if it were me, I at least would have asked for some security for the service . . . . A few other players to patrol the area or something . . . .

Everyone who thinks that an in-game "funeral" is inappropriate are hypocrites. Look at what you're using to post feedback... the fucking internet dumbasses. Saying that people ought not to pay their virtual respects is like saying you shouldn't ever use Shoutwire, but rather exclusively discuss articles with your friends in real life.

Sure, it's nerdy, but that's what WoW players invest their time in, and when a personality that one has interacted with for (probably) a long time won't ever play the game with you again, you gotta show some respect.

This is like if an athlete died off the field and they hung up his jersey and everyone had a moment of silence, and then a bunch of fans from the other team streaked across the field. Unnecessary, but hilarious.

To the dead guy: RLPWNED!

So you people are saying that if a human being you've known dies, than you are an idiot for feeling something about his death?

When someone YOU know and respect dies, please let me know so I can bash you over the head with a baseball bat and call you a dumbass, and see how you like being mocked for having Human feelings.

Granted I can understand where some of you are coming from. You say it's only a game, but consider this: through this: the game is the way they met, and it's how they became friends. Are you saying that their friendship is somehow less important because it formed online instead of in person?

Would you, personally, feel sad if an online friend died? I wonder that.

So, in essence, what you are saying is that if YOU don't agree with it, it must be destroyed?

On a side-note, I agree they should have planned it better. If I were holding such an event I would have chosen a non-contested area, like a Horde home-city or something. Doing it out in the open, on a PVP server, wasn't the smartest thing they could have done.

FidoMeet Joe Sixpack
Howdy everybody, Joe Sixpack here. I never met you all before, but I was having some pops last night with my bud Fido and he said if I wrote this down, he’d fix up the spellun’ and put it on the internet. He’s mostly full of shit, but I did it anyway. This is about Thursday night. The wife had the kids at football practice and going by her sister’s and I was home tipping back some cold ones and looking for something to watch on TV. I seen the debate thing was on b...

As we know, everyone in Washington DC are assholes of varying degree. Last week we called Sarah Palin out for being a dumb cunt and an asshole. And that's coming from me. If you're actually voting for Palin, people named cadpig, you're a dumb asshole enabler. Palin is worthless and would have the US on a road to destruction that would involve hurting our allies too. What's even more disturbing than people who watched Palin on Katie Couric wanting to vote for her ...
