A look into technology and religion and where it might go in the near future.
In today’s modern civilization, the purpose of religion has been under fire quite a lot recently. Nowadays the average intelligence level has arisen much since the early 1900’s and science has come a long way. We now have technology that really seemed like magic to people decades ago. We started off thinking that the world was flat like a pancake and denounced anything to the contrary. Then we declared that everything revolved around us instead of the sun. When we figured out that the earth was round and revolved around the sun with many other planets, it triggered a lot of thinking outside of the box.
Nowadays we have cloned sheep, built many different types of “flying machines”, and even built one that could leave the earth. The telegraph was the height of advanced technology in the late 1800s, while now email is starting to make “snail mail” finally earn its nickname and the Internet opened a whole new world to people.
How does this all tie in with religion? Well in my experience, I have noticed that the more scientific you get the less religious you get. There are hundreds of different opinions on religion regarding its purpose, or which god to report to, etc. I think that people are just simply looking for answers and all I propose is a method to finding those answers.
Technology is increasing so fast that socially, and mentally a lot of people find it hard to keep up. We are close to having cosmetic babies, neural implants that can access Google, and other seemingly sci-fi movie props for real.
I am not being funny when I mention that GRIN technologies will take us “there”. GRIN is an acronym for
Genetics, Robotics,
Information, and
Nano-technology. Each discovery in one area has the potential to exponentially advance any of the other 3 areas. There are organizations in place to make sure that we as people don’t blow ourselves up once we are able to download nuclear bombs on our iPod “super-duper- nano”.
Transhumanism can best be explained by this excerpt from the WTA front page.
“The World Transhumanist Association is an international nonprofit membership organization which advocates the ethical use of technology to expand human capacities. We support the development of and access to new technologies that enable everyone to enjoy better minds, better bodies and better lives. In other words, we want people to be better than well.”You should read their declaration here:
