Ex-oil man, T. Boone Pickens is the founder of Mesa Petroleum and founder and chairman of BP Capital Management. Mr. Pickens has a plan to drastically cut the United States need for foreign oil, not by drilling, but using wind, solar and natural gas.
Instead of the normal finger pointing and hot air we usually get, this man has a plan and it makes sense to me.
T. Boone Pickens is the man. The man with a plan to reduce the United States need for foreign oil. Not through playing the blame game, but with *GASP* a real PLAN!
Mr. Pickens is the founder of BP Capital Investments and Mesa Petroleum. He himself has stated that World oil production peaked in 2005. Despite the growing demand and price increases, oil production has fallen over the last three years. Not only that but oil is getting more expensive to produce, harder to find and that there is just not enough to keep up with world demand for the future.
So according to Pickens, it is far to little and far to late to drill our way out of the quandary we have found ourselves in.
In 1970, we imported 24% of our oil. Now it is 2008 and that percentage has risen to a staggering 70% and it is still growing.
Calculating current prices, we are sending $700 billion dollars out of the country just this year alone. Think thats bad? The projections for the next 10 years state that the number would be more like 10 TRILLION...that is if nothing is done. So lets get to the nuts and bolts of Mr. Pickens plan...
THE PICKENS PLAN
First let us look at what we use for energy...
Coal is 50% - Natural Gas is 22% - Nuclear is 20% - Other forms is at 8%
Pickens plan is to take the Natural Gas at 22% and put that into the transportation sector. What would replace that 22%? Wind baby, wind.
According to the Dept. of Energy, the American Great Plains can harness 20% of our energy needs. Plus being so centrally located power can be equally distributed east to west, also bringing badly needed jobs to the Mid-West. In fact they are saying that N. Dakota alone could potentially provide power for more than a quarter of the country.
Now to the Natural Gas being used in our vehicles instead of petrol...Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs)
According to NGVAmerica, there are more than 7 million NGVs in use worldwide, but only 150,000 of those are in the United States. We have a domestic power source that is not only cheaper but much cleaner also.
The California Energy Commission states that critical greenhouse gas emissions from natural gas are 23% lower than diesel and 30% lower than gasoline. The vehicles are already there, we just have to demand it. Plus I know from personal experience that there are kits to convert your old petrol engine into a Natural Gas burning middle finger to the foreign oil interests.
It seems that Mr. Pickens plan is a great bridge for the U.S. to become more energy independent by at least 1/3 if not completely in the very near future.
Whomever the new president will be, this seems like a great chance for us to pull ourselves out of the tar-pit of foreign oil. However, it is up to the American people to shout loud enough to that president and to our congressmen that we have had enough and that we need a real plan.
Now if congress and the executive branch can pull their thumbs out of their asses and not get in the way, we could be the economic powerhouse we once were.
To my fellow Americans...I like this plan. It seems not only realistic, but profitable for all. Look at Mr. Pickens website and decide for yourselves...Let us all scream, FUCK YOU, to foreign oil and a HELL YEAH for a cleaner environment. Amen...
