Government officials say 8,000 of the 10,000 people who lived here have died, most of them crushed as half of the town's buildings fell in on them. Most of those buildings that have not collapsed now teeter at frightening angles, as though ready to tumble too.

What a tragedy! That's a very unstable area over there. Makes me glad to be in Canada. We don't have major natural disasters on that scale over here.

This makes me wonder why Western companies are so keen to move manufacturing production to such a geologically unstable region as China or, have they even considered this factor in their headlong rush towards reducing their labour costs?

China is a VAST country, not all geologically unstable. Year round searing deserts to year round permafrost.

Western countries move operations to China to increase profits for the higher earning executives while sacking workers.

Karma - an 11 year old girl had to have her leg cut off to be freed from rubble. A lot of casualties are school kids- I guess with karma they deserved it then?
