Even if it take a liter of HIV saliva to infect a person, there is that chance only a drop of it can infect you also. Just depends how lucky the virus was in that saliva.

The free HIV test takes 3 months before it will show up as positive, if you have been infected that is. This test is checks for antibodies to the HIV-virus in the blood and is quite cheap to perform. There is, however, another test (PCR) that checks the blood for fragments of retroviral DNA or RNA. This test is much more expensive, but will be positive almost immediatly after exposure.

The issue is that the suspect intentionally spat in the officers face intending to infect him with a deadly disease. There for while it may not have been "violent" it is nonetheless a potentially lethal attack.

I hear of this on the radio down here in Texas. After the suspect spat in the officers face he reportedly said:

"I have AIDS"

piece of shit deserves his jail time.
