Saddam did follow the UN's request allthough reluctantly, the fact he had no wmd's, which btw your government was absolutely sure where they were and how many he had of them, is proof to exactly that.
The US infact ignored the UN when it said Iraq had complied to the wishes of the UN team in charge of the investigation.

And yes it is very heroic to kill people from your tank or attack helicopter compared to blowing yourself or shooting unguided missiles into the country that occupies parts of yours.
Shooting kids in the head with a sniper rifle is also a very noble hobby.

Or wait, using political tools like boycotts to starve a people out of supporting the the government they elected is very moral.
