Officials demanded the return of the booty recovered last year by a U.S. deep-sea exploration firm, saying the 19th-century shipwreck at the heart of the dispute is the Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes — a Spanish warship sunk by the British navy southwest of Portugal in 1804 with more than 200 people on board.

I believe there is a precedent for this to be found in the case of Finders Keepers v. Losers Weepers.

I'm pretty sure that if anything crashes at sea then the old salvage laws apply.

Finders Keepers v. Losers Weepers is actually quite accurate.

If you call for help and your ship has already gone down, the person you called for help can claim your ship and it's cargo as their own.

There is a limit on the amount of miles you have to be out at sea but I think it's only three miles out, away from any port, harbour or shoreline.

Spain should get the coins back but first have to settle the $500 million dollar exploration, recovery and shipping fee.

This reminds me of the copyrights that some companies file on ideas of ways of doing things, without any technology to actually *implement* them. Then they wait in the shadows for some company to come along, and develop and further enhance the idea. When it becomes financially feasible, they pounce out of the shadows, shouting "copyright infringement!", to reap the benefits of someone else's research and development.

If Spain was actively pursuing this treasure, and it fell in Spain's national border, then *maybe* they could have a case here. But someone else has spent countless millions searching for, and bringing up artifacts from this site. The right thing for Spain to do would be to offer to pay for the salvage, along with something extra, to make it worth the salvager's time and efforts.
