The Speedo LZR Racer swimsuit is making such a splash in the pool that U.S. head coach Mark Schubert believes every record in the sport could fall at the Beijing Olympics.

yeah well personally i think that suit and all others should be banned. how can you compare against previous athletes when they now have an advantage... its basically cheating others out of there records. keep it simple & equal

In all cases of pushing the envelope, we imagine we are drawing closer to an imaginary line. But that's never the case. The line is where we are now. The push carries the line further every year.

There are a number of 'aids' that are already forbidden. You aren't allowed to use flotation devices of any kind (why they are debating the buoyancy of the suits), nor can you use a propulsion aid like swim flippers or hand boards. If you could, it would be easy to get better times. With nothing but swim flippers, you can go a great deal faster even if you don't use your arms.

But the spirit behind the aids which are forbidden is being broken. It's not about finding loopholes. the idea is to stop the sport from becoming about what you are wearing instead of who you are. This is why the original Olympic athletes went naked - to prove that there is nothing there but the man, his training and his will.

The athletes do not benefit from these suits, because all of them will be wearing them. A company benefits. What this does is sponge money from our Olympic hopefuls to be poured into the coffers of private enterprise. It does nothing for the sport.

The way it should be looked at is that swimsuits were originally allowed only to preserve modesty. If the suit does anything more for the athlete than preserve modesty, then it is breaking the spirit of the rules. If it is superior to (at best) shaven skin, then it violates the spirit of the rules.

I actually care because competitive swimming was the main sport of my youth. I never hit the Olympic level, but I did swim on a daily basis with people who now have Olympic medals.

It looks like we finally have an aswer to the question "What's gayer than a man in a speedo?"

Sadly the answer is the same as the question....lol

There's nothing gay about swimming (drown otherwise?), and there's nothing gay about being the best at a sport. There's nothing gay about wearing speedos for racing (kinda have to), any more than it's gay to wear biking shorts in the Tour de France.

What's gay is people who wear speedos outside of a race, or people who wear biking shorts off of a bike.
