Some of us seem to believe we can encompass art into one easily fitted category that we can proclaim what art is and is not. This ed looks at one of the main theories of art and the difficulties in trying to narrow art down to one definition.

There once was a time that me and my friends tried to pursue the definition of art. I know I gave up on that.

It's whatever you find pleaseing to the eye whether thats a naked girl or a flower blowing in the breeze. Something you find intriguing and stimulates your mind.

Or for some of the people on this site, a turd in a can and a chick taking a shit on another girls face. and maybe some guy fapping to a picture of a fat chick or a man (no name needed) inserting his penis into a dead giraffe.

Good article. I consider the impossibility of defining art to be paradoxically one of it's defining traits. If it can be easily defined, then it probably isn't art. It seems to me that art cuts to the heart of a matter when exposition fails.

Ah, awesome editorial.
Learned something here.

I just see art as something that has taken time to be created with a vision in mind. Because only then, to me, can something come out and look so beautiful, it requires hard work.

A symbol or metaphor that is to be interpreted by the minds eye, in attempt to confuse and train the natural Eye to better see worldly truth.

fuck the moli ad! sorry
great article, since we're all giving personal definitions of art. i think art is the final product of an artist's world view exspressed symboliclly in a manner similar to live4music's definition. i guess that means i consider most things art, if they can invoke an emotional responce to the world symbolically. difference between good art and bad is the world view of the artist. which is cool because there can be good/bad art from my perspective that others completely disagree with and it is still art.

Just a quote dealing with music I'd like to share:

"Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent."
~Victor Hugo

To me, that can encompass art as a whole, not just music.

A piece of art is an object that exposes the divine radiance within all, bringing about a realization that connects the viewer to their inner being.

i'll tell you what art is not:

a fucking starving dog tied up to the corner of a gallery.

going on a side rant, i hate conceptual art. the only skill conceptual artists have is the skill to bullshit people into thinking thier cobbled together tat has some kind of thought provoking, hoyty toyty significance.

to me anyway, art should be something that has immediate effect. a "wow that is awsome/beautiful/facinating" reaction. not a 5 minute think on trying to figure out why someone has shat on a curtain and nailed it to a tree.

i'm a digital artist myself , so i have an appreciation of art when an element of trained skill has been used, especially in the medium i work in where there is a lot to learn. a use of tools and creativity come together to make something that not everyone can do. art should be impressive.

if we think about conceptual art, really you could say that every one of us is an artist, because any one of us could come up with some random bullshit idea and call it "artwork". it doesnt require trained skills.
