Should ad blocking be illegal? What about the norm? Here's why you should occasionally shock the monkey.

"I hate ads, but I understand they're a necessary evil on tv, magazines, internet etc. What I don't like is when you don't have a choice as to whether or not you have to watch them." - Scobiewan

Why are "ads" a necessary evil? TV, Internet, it isn't free, we pay for it, some more than others.

i make it a habit to avoid companies who force "ads" down my throat at every turn.

Tim Horton's can suck my ding-a-ling. Ford can eat $hit (not just for their ads but for their quality). i could spend the next hour listing companies who have a really bad product but are profitable because of "marketing". look at the NFL.

@Hockey

I had written something about a year ago about how internet advertising has gotten way out of hand (it was leading into a rant about in-game advertising). I think it's a bit relevant.

"Now, for another look at how advertising is practically ruining a perfectly good medium- Let's look at the internet.

For a succinct summary of what I'm about to rant about, all I have to say is that I have had to manually filter several adserve (shorthand for advertising service) sites through my host files just so I can navigate shoutwire (they kept crashing Firefox). Having to modify a Windows System File just to navigate a site because of a shitty ad is a pretty good indicator of how fucked up things are.

Advertising back in the early days of the internet was simple- Banner ads. Just a picture for a link to another site. Then someone came up with the idea of pop-up ads. This one creation has led to almost every problem web users face today. Spyware, malware, oversized temp files, tracking cookies, crashed computers; all of it came from pop-up ads. Spyware can install from them and displays them, cookies are installed when the browser window loads (irregardless of how fast you close it; you don't have to click on anything in the window for a tracking cookie to get you), poorly programmed ads can cause browser hangups or crashes, and some can even hijack your computer, here's an example:

There seems to be a new type of pop-up ad that has been gaining in popularity. I have mostly found it on torrent indexing sites (I haven't come across it recently though). It was for "Mania TV", something I have yet to see what it is nor do I really care (from what I've seen it just looks like a Youtube clone, except "extr3me!"). The ad would loadm then immediately maximize itself and then go fullscreen, and then (the worst part) it would actually run code that deactivates most of Window's shortcut keys! That means no ALT+F4, no ALT+TAB, or even the fucking Windows key. The only key combination that works is good old CTRL+ALT+DELETE; and that presents a problem because when you close out any brower object in Task Manager it shuts down the whole browser (and when you kill a ManiaTV ad from the taskbar, guess what? It will most likely cause your browser to crash; so you ahve to use the Task Manager anyway). And killing the actual system process will yield the same results. So any web sites you were viewing or in-browser items you were running (such as a game or Flash Movie) are gone. This is what advertising has come down to. Fully hijacking your computer and forcing you to view their content or losing whatever you were doing at the time."

It's the bullshit that advertisers are pulling that are making people block ads. If they stopped being such greedy bastards and kept it fucking simple and easy- there wouldn't be a problem. The day they embraced the pop-up ad was the day the internet would begin to go to hell.

@Behemoth
"In fact, I'm getting pissed off on the main SW page where when you move your mouse over a highlighted word and some gay ass video comes up. FUCK those ads."
- I've managed to completely block those ads. I don't even see the links (it appears as regular text). If you don't want to have to use something like noscript (which breaks certain widely used internet things) or a firewall- there's a simple way to go about blocking them.
Open up your hosts file in notepad (in XP it's located in windows/system32/drivers/etc) and add a space under where it says localhost, and copy the following:

0 images.intellitxt.com
0 www.intellitxt.com
0 http://www.intellitxt.com
0 http://intellitxt.com
0 http://images.intellitxt.com
0 www.images.intellitxt.com
0 us.intellitxt.com
0 http://us.intellitxt.com
0 http://intellitxt.com

Save, close notepad, clear your browser cache, close and reopen your browser, and they should be gone. I know this works in Firefox, I haven't tested it with another browser, but it should work.

I think ads should be illegal! These ad makers can suck my fucking cock, I don't watch TV now, just d/l because I can't stand ads, I don't start surfing the net till most shit is blocked. And most ads are just bullshit to fuck your PC up.

Also as it's been mentioned who the fuck actually clicks on this bullshit?
"WARNING YOUR CLOCK MAY BE WRONG" OHNOES MUST CLICK! lol fucktards.

Advertisers and marketers can go to hell.
It's like in the book No Logo, if the companies who pay to have their advertisements on popular websites took even a quarter of that money and spent it on their actual product, they'd need much less advertising, since people would naturally be attracted to a good product.

Not saying you don't need some advertising, or else nobody would know what's out there, but the corporate world spends way too much on their image, and not on their product.

A big example is Nike, the CEO has even said they used to think of themselves as a manufacturing company, now they are purely a marketing company who buys products from overseas sweatshops (literally) and sells them for 50x the price.

To solve the problem: YES block ads! The more useful they prove to be to the marketers, the more and more you'll see of them. This will force companies to produce something called a quality product, and people will start to pay for the product they get, not the advertising that got them to access it for free (in some cases STILL pay a shitload).

"It doesn't make sense to say 'block all ads because .001% of them are bad'... That's like saying 'don't go outside in the rain, because sometimes people get struck by lightning'"

I think your .001% estimate is a bit off. And by a bit, I mean way the fuck off in left field somewhere. I don't know anyone who has been struck by lightning. I do know dozens of people who have had their computer fucked up by adware on multiple occasions.

When companies decide to advertise shit I'm interested in, in a non-invasive, non-retarded way, I'll click their add. As someone mentioned "WARNING YOUR CLOCK MAY BE WRONG" just doesn't do it for me... or anyone I know personally really. Do these people even exist?

Near as I can tell 99% of the internet advertisers consider their market to be computer illiterate people, or the mentally handicapped. Gee, really makes you wonder why the rest of us don't click on their shitty advertisements.

Fetcher, perhaps the people you know keep visiting shady neighborhoods? I don't visit porn sites, warez sites, or torrent sites or dating sites, and I haven't had a problem with bad ads. I rarely see them.

In fact, the bad one on SW not too long ago happens to be the ONLY one I've seen all year. That said, my girlfriend at the time DID get a virus from an ad - from one of the above mentioned sites.

Shady sites are shady. Don't judge the entire internet by that fact. When's the last time you've seen a spyware / virus ad on a Google property, or somebody's blog? You haven't.

Adsense and doubleclick make up about 90% of the advertising industry right now, and I guarantee you that you won't see a bad ad on those networks. So your estimate is way way off. My .001% is probably too high.

As for the "i pay for the internet" arguments.. I run several websites. I don't get any of that money you pay for the internet, in fact I spend about $300-$400 per month to bring you these websites.

Maybe you're not paying enough? Up your ISP bill to about $100,000 per person per month and maybe we can remove ads from the internet entirely.

Also, I'm not advocating annoying ads. If you read the link to my blog post in there, you'd see I only advocate simple banner and text ads.

Could someone explain this phrase I keep hearing about the internet being free..Keep the internet free?

I pay $70.00 a month how is that free?

Net neutrality died when espn 360 restricted use to certain providers only, and that sucks but it was years ago it's too late to complain. Non evasive ads would never get a complaint but evasive ads piss everyone off.
Block those jerks, but remember if thats how the site gets paid, it won't stay around without support.

But there is no FREE INTERNET.

For free internet access,(what you're now paying for) get a wireless card and with a little luck a neighbor will have an unlocked network and you will be near enough to leech off it.

I find it remarkable you don't get this concept. People also pay for telephone line rental. But that doesn't mean they want their conversations and communications to be ultimately controlled by the demand or will of someone else, does it? They want the ability to FREELY speak about what they want to talk about.

As we know, everyone in Washington DC are assholes of varying degree. Last week we called Sarah Palin out for being a dumb cunt and an asshole. And that's coming from me. If you're actually voting for Palin, people named cadpig, you're a dumb asshole enabler. Palin is worthless and would have the US on a road to destruction that would involve hurting our allies too. What's even more disturbing than people who watched Palin on Katie Couric wanting to vote for her ...
