Should ad blocking be illegal? What about the norm? Here's why you should occasionally shock the monkey.

How about this: no. Common sense tells me not to make my computer vulnerable to superfluous and potentially harmful bullshit that comes with web advertisements.

Personally, I'd prefer to be the only one with a gargantuan penis. Kill all the big cock ads anyway.

Seriously, I think it's something we all should know is a necessary evil.

Good ed.

I don't mind ads. I mind how invasive they are. Many ads just take over. Or play the worst most annoying sound. It sucks. Fuck ads. This isn't TV, ads are one thing, full-blown commercials popping up over the whole web page and being totally annoying, is something else.

the majority of ads aren't harmful - especially if you're running an up to date web browser and operating system.

It doesn't make sense to say "block all ads because .001% of them are bad"

That's like saying "don't go outside in the rain, because sometimes people get struck by lightning"

@fleck

I agree with you there. In one of the articles I linked to, I go over the make money vs pissing off your audience quotient that many websites just don't understand.

Unfortunately, many are driven to use those tactics when they can't cover their costs with regular ads.

There'd be no such thing as ad-blocking if ads weren't so deliberately intrusive.

This is like saying I shouldn't fast forward through commercials for the good of the TV network.

A TV station, or a website like Shoutwire, produce FREE AND OPEN content to people in the hopes that they will view the advertising as well. I don't owe that to the content providers. I owe them nothing. They decided to give me something free, so I'm taking it and I'll modify it however I damn well please to improve my personal experience. It's not my fault if that turns out to be a faulty business model.

Of course that will cripple the internet right? Well just like I pay for cable TV, if the content provided is good enough I will fork over money to view it.

So, unlike TV, when it comes to the web you'd pay your ISP for access, then pay again for content? WTF? I'm glad you don't speak for everybody.

To suggest that ad blocking somehow strips revenue from a website is like arguing that a person who doesn't want to shop at Hollister and closes his eyes every time he passes a branch-store is stealing revenue. It's bullshit.

FidoFuck You, I Like My Bike
Up with bikes. Bicycles are the greatest invention since the wheel. Really, there are 2 wheels, making them doubly as good. The downside to bicycling is dealing with idiots in automobiles. White knuckled, bleary eyed buffoons in a hurry to go nowhere. Heads up during a collision, there’s no contest between a bike and a car, the car wins. The only upside is perhaps the opportunity to be thrown headfirst through the dumbfuck’s windshield and then be able in your blood...
